Capri has long been a dream island destination for travellers from around the world. Whether visiting by private boat, shared boat tour, or even ferry, visitors frequently find themselves with just a few hours to soak up the charm of this Italian paradise. With that in mind, if you've just docked and have about three or four hours to explore, here’s how to make the most of your time and enjoy some of Capri's most captivating sights!

The Layout of Capri Island

To plan your visit, it's helpful to think of Capri as having three "levels":

  1. Sea level - this is where you will find Marina Grande (the ferry port) and, on the other side of the island, the smaller Marina Piccola, which is mainly beach clubs and restaurants. The port has a lot of little touristy shops, cafés and restaurants, and lovely colourful buildings, but don't be fooled into thinking this is the main event! From Marina Grande there is a funicular (like a little tram), taxis and buses to take you up to the island's key village areas, while from Marina Piccola, you can take buses or taxis.

  2. Middle level - here, you will find the main village area (also called "Capri") and the famous "Piazzetta".

  3. Top level - this is where the small village of Anacapri is located, and the famous chairlift.

Anacapri Awaits

When you’ve disembarked, hop straight on a short bus or taxi ride up to Anacapri. The 10 - 15 minute cliffside drive will be memorable in itself! Anacapri is the smaller and higher of the two villages on the island and is known for stunning viewpoints and more tranquil atmosphere.

In Anacapri, take the chairlift to Monte Solaro. The chairlift roundtrip takes about 13 minutes and rewards you with awe-inspiring views. You’ll see not just the island itself but also the shimmering sea and neighbouring coastlines of Sorrento and the entire Bay of Naples. Anacapri also has a famous Villa San Michele, a haven for art and history lovers with its own spectacular view.

Top tips:

  • The chairlift is a single person chair (as pictured below), and it is most suited to adults and older children/teens as there is only a flimsy lap bar in place. While small children are allowed to sit on a parent's lap, this may not be a great experience if you have a child who likes to squirm!

  • You can buy your tickets on the spot from the chairlift station.

Explore Capri’s Piazzetta

Once you’ve enjoyed the heights of Anacapri, head by bus or taxi to Capri's main square, the Piazzetta. This lively hub is the island’s beating heart, featuring cafes where you can enjoy a Spritz or an espresso while soaking up the atmosphere.

Stroll through the square and admire elegant architecture, including the Church of Santo Stefano. Perhaps treat yourself to a gelato as you enjoy the warm sun and magnificent atmosphere. People-watching in such a picturesque setting adds to the magic of your day!

Don't miss the lovely Via Camerelle, famous for its luxury shops and designer fashion boutiques - it's perfect for a spot of window shopping, or a high end splurge.

Top tip:

  • If there's a really long line to board the bus from Anacapri to Capri at the bus stop near the chairlift, just take a short walk back about 100m along Viale Tommaso de Tommaso, and get on at the bus stop before it.

Discover Hidden Gems

Take some time to explore the charming side streets of Capri. You’ll encounter boutique shops showcasing unique artisanal crafts, luxury fashion, and delightful local delicacies. You might come across an artist's studio or a serene garden—a great spot to take a break.

If time allows, don't miss the Gardens of Augustus. This lovely area offers stunning views of the Faraglioni rocks, a must-see for every traveler. You will have seen it on your boat tour or boat charter - but seeing the rocks from above, alongside the distinctive architecture of Via Krupp is a one of a kind photo opportunity you won't want to miss!

Top tip:

  • If you are ready to get back down to Marina Piccola or Marina Grande and there are long bus lines, you might consider a leisurely walk instead! It's an easy 15 - 20 minutes downhill, and will likely be quicker than waiting for the bus.

Visit the Blue Grotto Land Entrance

If the Blue Grotto is open, but the wait time meant you missed the chance to visit by boat, don't despair: you could consider heading to the land entrance for a chance to see it.

The Blue Grotto's glowing azure waters and unique row boat experience are truly enchanting, but be ready for a very long wait; lines can be literally hours long during peak tourist seasons, and you'll only be inside for about five minutes or so. This means that using your free time to line up is really only for those determined to tick Capri's Blue Grotto off the bucket list! The entrance is also a little out of the way compared to other attractions.  If the line proves too daunting, don’t worry—Capri has plenty of other exquisite sights that will delight your senses.

Top tips:

  • If you want to try lining up at the Blue Grotto land entrance, going directly there by taxi is going to be the most time-efficient option; otherwise you need to take a bus from Anacapri. There are no buses from Marina Piccola, Marina Grande nor from the Piazzetta.

  • Your shared boat tour or private boat charter will take you to see Capri's Green grotto and White grotto in any case, and these also feature spectacular water colours and rock formations, so those might be enough for most, and will free up your time to see the island's other beautiful sights.

  • If you want the best chance of seeing Capri's Blue Grotto by boat, take a private charter. This way you are in control of the itinerary and can opt to wait it out at the entrance on your boat (if the Blue Grotto is open). Just like the land entrance, the wait times by boat can be hours long at times, and the boat will be moving on the swell in the heat and the sun, so waiting isn't recommended for families with children or those prone to seasickness.

Making the Most of Your Visit

With just three or four hours on land during your shared boat tour of Capri, you can experience some of the island's best attractions while savouring its unique charm. From the picturesque heights of Monte Solaro and the vibrant Piazzetta and village area, Capri is sure to provide unforgettable memories.

Top tips:

  • If you want more time, consider a private charter where you can opt to extend your time ashore.

  • If you're arriving by ferry, don't skip an around-the-island boat trip! Many of Capri's greatest sights are only visible from the water (including the water itself - it's a sight to behold!) There are choices to suit all budgets and preferences; consider booking in advance to ensure availability, especially for private options that allow you to swim.

So grab your hat, slather on that sunscreen, and get ready for an adventure. Capri will enchant your heart with every breathtaking sight you encounter!
